ABOUT US

ABOUT US

Welcome to Northern New Mexico, courtesy of The Johns Family.  Justin Johns began outfitting in Colorado back in 2001, and has operated his own outfitting business since.  In 2023, he started working on the transition from Colorado to New Mexico and in January of 2026 purchased Rancho Rojo Outfitters from long-time guide and outfitter, Mark Harper.  With Mark's work ethic, solid reputation, top-notch guides and loyal client list, Justin plans to step right in and carry on the business with the same ethics and attention to personal detail.  We operate on thousands of private acres in Northern New Mexico, and are permitted in the Santa Fe National Forest, and the Farmington BLM.  Our business philosophy is simple, to run quality hunts, with quality service and to simply treat others the way we would like to be treated.  We offer hunts for every level of hunter, as well as every level of physical ability.  Justin's wife, Page, and sons Zane and Payson are very instrumental in the conduct of the business and can be found helping with all aspects of daily operations.  Ranching and hunting are all we know and all we have ever done and is what we are passionate about.

OUR HUNTS

Rancho Rojo Guides & Outfitters is dedicated to providing exceptional outdoor experiences and outfitting services with quality and personal service at the forefront of everything we do. We are passionate about connecting with people in God's creation to deliver unforgettable adventures and memories that last a lifetime.  We believe the best hunts begin long before opening day with preparation, knowledge, and a commitment to doing things the right way.  Our preference is to have smaller groups of hunters in camp at one time to allow for more opportunity and personalized service.  Our guides are true, seasoned veterans in the ways of Western Big Game hunting and are un-matched in their knowledge of the country and the game animals we peruse. We look forward to the opportunity to share time in the woods with you.

GUIDED HUNTS:
ELK & MULE DEER:

All of our hunts are 100% Fair Chase on prime private ranch property, National Forest, and BLM Lands.  All of our hunts are on a limited basis to properly manage the quality of our big game herds on the lands we lease.  Our private land hunts come with a guaranteed private land tag and most often a 100% shot opportunity.  We operate in Units 2A, 2B, 2C, 5A, 5B, 6A, 6B, 6C, & 7, and are permitted for the Santa Fe National Forest, as well as the Farmington BLM District.  Elevation of most of the hunts can range from 6,500 to 9,500 feet.  Elk hunts are mostly spot and stalk with some tree stand and ground blind setups as well as calling during the rut.  260-320 class bull elk can be expected in these units with larger trophy potential always existing.  Mule Deer will range from 160-200.  We use 4x4 vehicles and ATVs to access different places on the ranches and then hike on foot from there.  Because of the wide range of terrain and elevation, we are able to accommodate many levels of physical abilities. Our full-service cook will prepare three meals each day along with many snack foods and drinks.  Clean bedding and towels will be provided.

TERMS OF THE GUIDED HUNTS:

Hunts are typically 2 on 1 with 1 on 1 hunts available for an additional fee of $1,000. We retrieve your trophy from the field and transport it to the headquarters or local processor. Caping, processing and taxidermy costs are client responsibility and are not included in the hunt price. Client is responsible for the state tag price and tax (6.625%).  If you wish to leave your meat for local donation, you must still pay for the processing. Non-hunting members that come as a guest are $1,000 fee for all hunts except for the 3-day cow hunt.  Non-hunting guests during fully guided cow hunts are $150 per day.  With client permission, we will handle all client applications in the special Outfitter Draw.  March 18th, 2026, is the deadline for the draw.  10% gratuity on all hunts is an industry standard.

DEPOSIT & REFUND POLICY:

50% of the hunt price is required as a deposit to reserve all private land hunts.  A hunt is not considered booked until the deposit has been received, hunts are booked on a first come first served basis.  Balance of the total price is due 60 days prior to your hunt dates.  The deposit is non-refundable. A written contract is required and will be provided when the hunt is booked.

A $500 deposit is required for those applying in the special draw.  The deposit is non-refundable except when a tag is not successfully drawn.  If successful in the draw, 50% of the hunt price is then due, balance of the total fee is due 60 days prior to your hunt dates, if paying by check. A written contract is required and will be provided.

HARVEST REPORT REMINDER:

Just a reminder to all hunters who had a license to hunt any Big Game animal (including Turkey) for the 2025 season, there is a Mandatory Harvest Reporting Requirement in New Mexico (due by February 15, 2026).  This is required for everyone who hunted, whether you harvested an animal or not.  If you fail to report, future hunt applications as well as landowner permit conversions will be rejected.

DEER HUNT INFORMATION:

Mule Deer Trophy hunts we offer have limited licenses in units that produce mature B&C type bucks year after year.  These units still carry outstanding genetics with strong resident herd numbers and an increased population during colder months as new deer migrate in from the higher country that surrounds.  Numerous record book deer have been harvested from this area throughout the years. Units hunted are 2A, 2B, 2C, 5A, and 5B, which are quality deer management areas. These units have 180+ potential.  This is a spot and stalk hunt, driving to the area to be hunted and glassing, from highpoints, and walking thereafter. Terrain is easy to moderate with great access. Elevations hunted are from 6500 – 7500ft.  Successful draw percentage of our guided clients has been up to 20% the past 25 years, for all weapon types with clients enjoying some great hunting, with 100% shot opportunity on bucks up to the 200-inch class.  With client permission, we will handle all client applications in the special Outfitter Draw.  March 18th, 2026, is the deadline for the draw.  Our private land hunts come with a guaranteed tag that allows clients to apply in the Outfitter Draw to obtain the license.  Client must complete application by March 18th, 2026.  Tax on the hunt price will be 6.625%
